Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 11
By Paul Celmer
Where there is struggle and chaos, there is opportunity. And so with AFL teams struggling to find answers by shifting players in and out of the lineup and dipping into the stars of the af2, there is opportunity for the astute owner.
WR Sale Key - New Orleans VooDoo
Wide receiver Sale Key comes to the New Orleans VooDoo after spending the 2007 season with the af2 Stockton Lightning. In 2007 Key led the af2 Stockton Lightning with 129 receptions for 1,584 yards and 41 TDs. This big target played for the Blaze in 2006 before being injured. In week 10, Key had 7 catches for 70 yards and 2 TDs in his first game. Pick up Key as a potential WR2 with enormous upside.
WR Aaron Hosack - Colorado Crush
With Ben Nelson missing his second game in a row with a knee injury, the Crush have turned to young receivers Chad Owens and Aaron Hosack for a boost. Most likely, Owens is off the waiver wires. But Hosack should still be available and might just be the tonic to take you to an extra win, especially after his 10 catch, 88 yard, 4 TD day against the Rampage.
DS Chris Royal - Georgia Force
Royal, a former af2 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneer, was the af2 2007 Spalding Rookie of the Year. He tied for the league lead in interceptions with 14, was second in pass breakups with 43, and came in third in tackles with 117. Royal also tied for the lead in interception return TDs. Although he only had one INT in week 10, grab Royal as a gamble with the potential to become the next Rashad Floyd.
FB Josh Jeffries - Los Angeles Avengers
Jeffries is filling in for the injured Lonnie Ford. In week 10, Jeffries had 6 rushes for 9 yards and 2 TDs. Jeffries makes a productive replacement as long as Ford is out.
WR Ces'are Manning - Kansas City Brigade
The Brigade are suffering through a one-win season, and are looking to mix things up for a spark. In week 10 wide receiver Ces'are Manning, in again for the injured Charles Frederick, was the number one target with 13 catches for 128 yards and 2 TDs. Pick up Manning as a potential WR2. Keep an eye on Frederick's injury status, however.
WR Todd Devoe - Arizona Rattlers
Devoe stepped up for the injured Kevin Nickerson. In week 10 Devoe had an impressive 8 catches for 74 yards and 2 TDs. Pick up Devoe as a WR2 watch for Nickerson's return.
DS Clarence "The Claw" Lawson - Los Angeles Avengers.
It appears that this journeyman defensive specialist might finally have found his niche this year in Los Angeles. The Claw led the way for the Avengers in tackles in week 10 with 7 solo tackles and 3 assists. Lawson should make a nice pickup if he managed to fill the void left by the trade of Eddie Cannonico.
FB Kautai Olevao - Utah Blaze
With the Blaze struggling to find wins and willing to try anything, fullback Olevao might get more work. In week 10 Olevao had 5 rushes for 20 yards and a TD. Pick up Olevao as a backup FB to watch how he develops if you have a roster spot.
DS Travis Coleman - Brigade
As the Brigade seek answers by shuffling the pieces to the puzzle, Coleman could emerge as a productive source of points. In week 10 he had 6 tackles and an INT. Keep an eye on Coleman if you are in need of scoring from your defense.
