2007 Player Rankings for Week 6
by Simon McGrother April 4, 2007
Week 5 saw some tremendous games, high scores and significant upsets. Just what we like! The Dragons, despite another loss, showed that they really might be on the rebound, the VooDoo upset divisional rivals Orlando, the Rush cast serious doubts over the Avenger's resurgence, Georgia went down to their first loss in Columbus, who gambled it all on a 2-point conversion - fortune favors the brave. And Arizona also went for the 2-pointer when 1 would have taken them to overtime - and failed - fortune really just shows what a fickle SOB she can be by treating the brave like a punchbag!

In an 8- or 10-team fantasy league, there are 4 or 5 teams who's starting QB blows hot and cold (at best). Owners sweat throughout the weekend, whilst Joe Germaine or Sherdrick Bonner owners sip mai tais and wait for the points to start rolling in. Well those of us who suffer for our points had a better week than usual. Matt D'Orazio had a great day against the Avengers (for whom Sonny Cumbie was the exception to all this), Jeff Smoker continued to impress, Adrian McPherson won the battle of Texas (in spirit at least) even Rohan Davey had a monster day. So all of this does little to change the QB rankings, but imagine the peloton (to steal a term from the Tour De France) closing in on the leaders.

Unlike the quarterbacks, the receiving headlines were dominated by the usual suspects. Bobby Sippio was the pick of the bunch hauling in 5 scores for the Rush. Ben Nelson, Trandon Harvey (ARZ), Will Pettis and Siaha Burley all had four. After these were encouraging performances by Mike Horacek and Kevin Swayne in New York's feisty loss against the perfect Soul, and by Thabiti Davis for Las Vegas. The LA tandem of Kevin Ingram and Lenzie Jackson disappointed but should rebound next week as they (finally) play at home against the generous Rattlers. Jeremiah Pope returned to play well, Kevin Prentiss has been placed on the IR list, Marcus Nash missed his second game in a row, and Kenny Henderson, Jason Shelley and Aaron Boone were mysteriously not to be found near any field this weekend. Watch their status and decide accordingly. If they all skip again, Andrae Thurman, Troy Mason, Kenny Higgins and Ryan Dennard all take jumps upward. |

Dan Alexander has now rushed for 15 TDs, matching the best of 2006 in only 5 weeks. Bo Kelly continued his own fine season with a pair of TDs, but kudos of the week go to Torrance Marshall, linebacker acting as fullback, who amply filled the (slightly twisted) boots of Rodney Filer rushing for 3TDs. The luckless Storm may rely heavily on Marshall in the coming weeks. Outside of these guys it was a quiet week for fullbacks, with Lonnie Ford probably the most disappointing becoming the first fullback in living memory to fail to score against the Rush. |

Edie Moten again excelled and continues his inexorable rise up the rankings. He'll have to work hard to catch Rashad Floyd who added another 10-tackle haul to his resume. Georgia succumbed to their first loss of the season in no small measure due to the tackling of Brandon Hefflin and Rober' Freeman (who I suspect knocked a letter clean out of his name), both of whom had 10. Another man to hit double figures in tackles was Keyuo Craver who's quietly having a superb season for the Rattlers.

A.J. Haglund, in addition to kicking 9 of 10 extra points for the SaberCats, scored a TD and made 4 solo tackles. I think he may have helped an old lady across the street and saved a kitty from up a tree too. All in a week's work for the Ironman of the Game. Jay Taylor gets a whole 2 weeks to think about the FG he missed as time expired that would have taken the VooDoo to overtime - ouch. Final word to Carter Warley of New York, who is 19/20 on extra points and 3 of 4 on field goals. If the Dragons continue to improve, he could be quite an addition. |
