2007 Player Rankings for Week 15
by Simon McGrother June 6, 2007
We all know that turnovers will kill you. In the AFL this truism is
all the more cast in stone. Week 14 typified this rather well. The
quintessential example was Dallas against Philly - the two big QBs were
within a pass, a completion and a TD of one another - but in one category
Tony G had the edge over Clinty D - 2 interceptions to zero. The
quality of the Desperados is such that you have to play error free ball to
hang with them - the Soul can beat Dallas on their day, but those but
giving Dallas a +2 bump in the turnover column will be your death knell
every time. Another man with turnovers on his mind will be Kevin Nagle of
the Predators. Orlando continue to put their useless start to the
season behind them and are now turning in decent performances weekly. Tough
test of this revival was the trip to San Jose, and they matched them
stride for stride - but Kevin Nagle spilled a ball that Omarr Smith was
able to return the length of field for a score - when you lose by 7
points that 14 point single-play-swing weighs awfully heavy.

Stunning week for Lang Campbell leading the
Wranglers to a major upset at New York, in the same game Aaron
Garcia put up heady numbers too, despite the crushing defeat. Sonny
Cumbie led his Avengers to a fine win over the Rush, but his
individual performance will have failed to delight fantasy owners. Raymond
Philyaw had one of his best week's of the season with 8 scores and
more than 300 yards, fortunately his 2 picks did not hurt the Brigade.
Steve Bellisari showed that if you know who is playing under
center for the VooDoo they are worth starting but that is a lottery right
now. On the down side was John Dutton's Monday nightmare
performance against the Blaze's power house defense (note that the previous
phrase was sarcastic). Dutton was not the only Crush-er you could blame
for the debacle - but he is the QB and was plenty awful. They have 2
weeks to sort things out. And saving the best for the last Brett
Dietz continues to single-handedly be responsible for the Storm's
resurgence. One might argue that Tampa Bay were an improving franchise before
Brett took the helm, but few could contend that Dietz has given them an
edge which was sorely lacking previously. |

Will Pettis had a successive noteworthy
week: significant receiving, rushing and defensive stats. He has really
shown excellent form in the absence of Marcus Nash. In danger of
simply repeating last week's words Kevin Swayne was enormous
once more for the Dragons, but when your D concedes 82 points against the
Wranglers no amount of receiving is gonna save you. Derrick
Lewis is another man to get a mention in consecutive weeks - his 5TD haul a
big part of the Wrangler's win over the Dragons. Another contributor
for the Wranglers was Sedrick Robinson who only caught one pass,
but had a rushing TD, a kick return TD and 190 return yards. Terrill
Shaw is beginning to show what he is capable of with Brett Dietz
under center - 4 TD grabs and 115 yards. These stats were exactly
replicated by Jeremiah Pope of the Rattlers filling in very ably for
the absent Randy Gatewood. Siaha Burley clearly won the
duel with Damian Harrell (held scoreless for the first time in 79
games) but neither of them scored as well as they would have hoped under
the bright Monday night lights. |

Seriously quiet week for the FBs, perhaps it was
Nashville's bye made them all take it easy - no Dan Alexander to make
them look bad. The only multi-rushing-TD FB was Chris Ryan with a
brace against the (always susceptible to the rush) Brigade defense. In
the same game Dawan Moss was good again (he has really responded
well to the sting abuse he has been receiving in the sit and start
column) with aa rushing TD and a TD catch. Marlon Moye-Moore
Lonnie Ford and James Lynch all got rushing scores, Marlion
Jackson and Bob McMillen both caught TDs from the FB
position. Otherwise precious little to report in the FB world. |

Jacoby Sheperd was not a name that was
tripping off the tongue earlier in the season but he (and the entire Blaze
secondary) really shone against the Blaze and despite all their problems
this season can always claim that they were the crew to end Harrell's
scoring run. Another crew who had a week far in excess of their norm
was the Georgia secondary. Reggie Doster was huge again, and was
more than ably assisted by Hamin Milligan and David
Crocker. Amongst DBs who play both sides, DeShane Dennis had a big
offensive game and DeJuan Alfonzo clamed down a little and was
only excellent.

- A. J. Haglund, San Jose

- Todd France, Philadelphia
- Eric Houle, New Orleans
- Seth Marler, Tampa Bay
- Peter Martinez, Columbus
- Jason Witczak, Nashville
|
Steve Videtich kicked perfectly for the
Blaze but that kicking leg swings a little easier when you're winning by a
boat load. Todd Sievers hit all 8 xps and 1 of 2 FGs as Dallas
overcame the Soul. Best game of the week for kickers was probably the
Predators @ SaberCats, where Jay Taylor and A.J. Haglund
were both perfect including a 38 and 39 yard FG respectively. |
