2007 Player Rankings for Week 14

by Simon McGrother
May 30, 2007

Week 13 was almost upset free – which would have been a first for the AFL. The only results which could be considered upsets were simply a reestablishment of what we already knew, I refer to Utah overwhelming Orlando (5 weeks ago that would have been a cert), and the Rampage squeaking by the Crush. A couple of the expected results got there in unexpected ways: even without Ben Nelson the SaberCats scoring only 48 seems weird and the Brigade over the Avengers only raises eyebrows because of the high-score. And finally, at last, we get a Monday night game worthy of the name – hats off to the Dragons and VooDoo for a heart-pounding thriller.

  1. Chris Griesen, Georgia
  2. Clint Dolezel, Dallas
  3. Joe Germaine, Utah
  4. Mark Grieb, San Jose
  5. Tony Graziani, Philadelphia
  6. Aaron Garcia, New York

  24. John Kaleo, Tampa Bay (IR)
  25. Stoney Case, Tampa Bay (IR)

A generally strong week for the perennial big-boys, but Aaron Garcia, Tony Graziani and Joe Germaine owners will be happiest of all. Despite the loss a very big week for John Dutton with six scores and a ton of yardage. Brett Dietz threw 4 interceptions and mud in the faces of those who were singing his praises. Matt Nagy had a good week for Columbus against Dallas but threw two picks in a close game – that hurts. More uncertainty in the QB position in New Orleans means that even with a tidy performance by Steve Bellisari he stays near the bottom of the rankings.

  81. Kevin Prentiss, Las Vegas (IR)

  84. Curtis Fagan, Arizona

New York seemed to be in big trouble against the VooDoo missing both Mike Horacek and Chris Anthony but Kevin Swayne stepped into the breach manfully with 6 scores and 150 yards – and the Dragons needed every ounce of that effort to get the win, in no small part because of Tyronne Jones similarly impressive 5TDs and 123 yards. Siaha Burley and Damien Harrell did what they do, and Derrick Lewis did what he does not do enough with 4 scores and 226 yards. Disappointment for San Jose owners as James Roe, Rodney Wright, Jason Geathers and Cleannord Saintil combined for a mere 3 TDs. No great impact on the rankings as this is sure to turn around in Ben Nelson’s absence. Minor shout-out to Willis Marshall who only had 4 catches for 1 TD, but with 2 rushing TDs in addition I reckon that constitutes a tasty weekend.

  1. Dan Alexander, Nashville (BYE)
  2. Lonnie Ford, Los Angeles
  3. Torrance Marshall, Tampa Bay
  4. Ja'Mar Toombs, New York (IR)
  5. Chris Ryan, Grand Rapids
  6. Harold Wells, Columbus
  7. Marlon Moye-Moore, Orlando
  8. Bo Kelly, Arizona
  9. Josh White, Dallas
  10. Brian Johnson, San Jose
  11. Dawan Moss, Kansas City
  12. Robert Thomas, Colorado
  13. Wes Ours, Philadelphia
  14. Kevin Nagle, Orlando
  15. Dan Curran, New Orleans
  16. Marlion Jackson, Las Vegas
  17. Matt Huebner, Georgia
  18. James Lynch, New Orleans
  19. Bob McMillen, Chicago
  20. Josh Rue, Las Vegas
  21. Kevin Nagle, Orlando
  22. Chris Robinson, Utah
  23. Frank Carter, Utah
  24. Byron Douzart, Kansas City
  25. Phil Glover, San Jose
  26. John Peaua, Colorado
  27. Bruce McClure, Georgia

Very solid week for the FBs, with all the usual suspects scoring TDs and those that tend to score more than once - did so. Most notable performances include Wes Ours with 13 carries, 54 yards and 2 scores for the Soul – who were firing on all cylinders offensively; Dan Alexander who also had 13 carries for 2 scores and Lonnie Ford who scored on both of his touches. In fact all of the top 10 in the rankings scored this week, excluding the one on injured reserve.

  44. Jerald Brown, Columbus
  45. Traco Rachal, Tampa Bay
  46. Ryan Bowers, Orlando
  47. Calvin Spears, New Orleans

If DeJuan Alfonzo still counts as a defensive back he is rapidly becoming the league’s most valuable fantasy asset. Three receiving and one rushing touchdown, two and a half tackles, a pass breakup and he turns the Gatorade into wine? Marquis Floyd of the SaberCats was impressive with 5 tackles, 2 interceptions and an onside kick gently strolled back for a TD; given the sub-par performance of the San Jose offense, Marquis can certainly claim a game-winning performance. Reggie Doster of the Force had 7 tackles and 3 interceptions, I had WRs make fewer catches this week. And Chuck Wesley continued to put up impressive stats week after week: 11 tackles, a fumble recovery for a TD, a huge interception and a pass broken up – hard to ask more from your DBs.

  1. A. J. Haglund, San Jose
  2. Todd Sievers, Dallas
  3. Jason Ball, Colorado
  4. Brian Gowins, Grand Rapids
  5. Mark Lewis, Austin
  6. Steve Videtich, Utah
  7. Gary Kral, Kansas City
  8. Remy Hamilton, Los Angeles
  9. Carlos Martinez, Georgia
  10. Carter Warley, New York
  11. Dan Frantz, Chicago
  12. Steve Azar, Las Vegas
  13. Jay Taylor, Orlando
  14. Todd France, Philadelphia
  15. Eric Houle, New Orleans
  16. Seth Marler, Tampa Bay
  17. Peter Martinez, Columbus
  18. Jason Witczak, Nashville (BYE)

Brian Gowins was the star kicker of the week, holding steady as time expired to kick the game winner and then withstanding the onslaught of his celebrating team-mates. Carter Warley kicked well enough but he tackles like my gran: Tony Locke may have been caught by the Dragon who was breathing (fire) down his neck, but Carter took him out beautifully leaving Tony to high-step to the end-zone. In fairness to Carter he did make a tackle later in the game. Good weeks for Carlos Martinez, Steve Videtich and A.J. Haglund.
