2007 Player Rankings for Week 13
by Simon McGrother May 23, 2007
Week 12 completed the process of the earth falling off its axis. Two or three weeks ago you would have got huge odds against: Tampa, New York, Las Vegas, Nashville and (a Lenzie-Jackson-and-Kevin-Ingram-less) LA winning in the same week. In fact I’d have given you very attractive odds 3 days ago. Dallas may have chosen the right week for a bye. Chicago imploded in the absence of Bobby Sippio, Las Vegas started another new QB and Nick Rolovich looked very good. Tony Graziani is back for the Soul, and immediately they win (despite Tony only completing 7 passes) – talisman or what?

Brett Dietz cemented his reputation with a great outing for the Storm in their win over the Rattlers. 352 yds and 8TDs is a top tier fantasy scoring – but bear in mind that not every opponent has Arizona’s lamentable defense. John Dutton and the Crush continue to improve and look playoff bound. Raymond Philyaw had an immense outing (8 TDs) for the Brigade but it was insufficient to overcome Aaron Garcia (9 TDs) and the Dragons. Despite missing both Ben Nelson and Rodney Wright Mark Grieb managed to score 9 TDs, and didn’t even rely on James Roe. |

Who knows where San Jose finds them, but somewhere in the Bay Area there is a rich vein of quality receivers. With both Nelson and Wright absent the onus appeared to fall squarely on James Roe, but he only had one of the 9 Mark Grieb TD catches. Jason Geathers and rookie Cleannord Saintil carried the water as the SaberCats pounded the Rampage. The biggest news in the receiving area is the number of injuries to big names. Five or six of the top 15 catchers are either on IR or off it in name only. With so many of the A-list out of commission owners are hoping to find those 4th and 5th choicers who are coming good at the right time. So an abbreviated list of those who might be worth picking up: LaShaun Ward (listed as a DB, but snagged four TDs against Georgia in the absence of Jackson and Ingram), LA’s remaining schedule has a couple of tough games in the next 2 weeks, and then 3 high scoring shootouts at the end, Ingram can only return for the last of those. Travis LaTendresse of the Gladiators, with Rolovich seemingly a QB of note, and with a question mark hanging over Etu Molden’s fitness, Travis could be a big hitter in the last 4 weeks (he’s on bye this week). Jason Willis of New York, filling in for the injured Chris Anthony he comfortably outscored Mike Horacek (that won’t happen every week, but he might still be worth garbbing from the wire). Cornelius Bonner after being cut by the Katz he has joined the much more offensively useful Rampage and may finish the season much stronger than he started it. |

Harold Wells had a second consecutive multi-TD outing for the Destroyers and moves up the rankings particularly with questions over Matt Nagy’s fitness. Chris Ryan also added a week 12 pair to his week 11 brace and he too floats above some of his rivals. A new face on the rankings is an old favorite of mine: Marlion Jackson of the Gladiators. He has negative rushing yards on the season but caught 7 passes for 98 yards and a score in Nick Rolovich’s debut – the start of a beautiful relationship? As expected Dan Alexander had a big day against Chicago’s weak run-defense. But Torrance Marshall drew another blank and maybe his bubble has finally burst. |

DeJuan Alfonzo had a second straight week of dizzying offensive numbers to supplement his already worthy defensive stats. Such bi-directional play used to be the hallmark of the AFL but is now sufficiently rare to make DeJuan a fantasy must-have. Ahmad Hawkins was another man to do a little bit of everything in week 12. Eddie Moten tackles less often than usual, but made 2 picks and turned one of those into a TD. Rashad Floyd performed the same feat (the 2 picks) for the Crush, but had a bone-crunching 14 tackles in addition. But this left him as only second best tackler on his team as Chris Angel managed a heady 14.5. |

Eric Houle rapidly sinks beneath the horizon as the VooDoo continue their downward spiral. Better news for Steve Azar, who’s Gladiators finally showed some offense against the Blaze. Good week for Jay Taylor of Orlando and further improvement from Remy Hamilton. |
