The Muse's Corner

By the Philosopher of Arena Football
March 23, 2007

Improbable Events

I was pondering the fresh ink. This is the ink that has marked some recent records achieved in this young 2007 season. First there was Kevin Prentiss’ nine touchdown receptions. Astounding. Then, even more bizarre, was the five rushing touchdowns by both Dan Alexander and Josh White. And we are only in week 3.

But for all this achievement, there is one act in the Arena Football League that I desire to see. It has been so long since it happened, that even the grizzled veterans are not sure if the whispers are true. But the Muse knows:

“The game has gone too long
And all muscles are bent
And the clock has only one breath left
And your team’s last drive is spent.

And you wonder if it is time for home
As a shadow crosses you mind
For the Refs showed you no favors
And the wheel of fate was unkind.

But—there is still a chance--

There is no one to hold,
No one to align
No symmetry to bounce from
No place to hide.

A mere nine feet wide
The length of a grave
Formed by the high arc
Of the yellow scaffolding inside.

You stare into the dark gap
And feel yourself sick
Then let fall the ball to the turf
And launch the 4-point drop kick!”

That is right. Not many believe it, but the Muse has informed me that you can score 4 points if you drop kick a field goal. But this improbable feat of the drop-kick field goal has not been accomplished in an Arena for a decade. Will the record-breaking 2007 be its rebirth?
